A Conversation With Upcoming Artist, Sam Mooney
We were fortunate enough to interview Singer/Songwrite Sam Mooney and talk about upcoming projects of his. You can find links to his music and social media at the end of the article.
When did you realise that you had a passion for music?
Well, I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember, honestly! But I think one of the points in my life where it truly became a passion for me was when I got my first keyboard when I was eleven. That really fueled the fire for my love of piano and music in general. There were these built-in demos of songs on the keyboard that I would listen to and study to learn how to play new styles, especially blues and jazz. You couple that with the fact that I was listening to tons of great old soul music around that time and suddenly I started to improve in my playing at a pretty rapid rate. It was a fun time of discovering music in my life for sure! Who are your main inspirations as an artist? I’m always being inspired by new music, but there are also a bunch of artists who have influenced me for a really long time. Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and Dr. John were all big influences for me and specifically for my piano playing when I was young. As I got older, I got more into pop which lead me to artists like John Mayer, Maroon 5, John Legend and Eric Hutchinson. I still find inspiration in everyone I just mentioned, but I’ve also been really inspired in the last year or so by a lot of new pop/soul artists. Especially John Splithoff. I think he’s just absolutely slaying it right now. He always finds the coolest balance of Pop and R&B in his songs and I really wanna work with him one day. Everything he touches turns to gold! What would you like to achieve as an artist? So many things! But I think when I boil it all down, what I want most is to be able to make music that touches people and stands the test of time. To create songs and records that people carry with them through different times in their lives. Also, I really love playing shows so I’d love to be able to sustain long-term touring. Even though traveling a lot has it’s challenges, I get a lot of energy and excitement out of going to new places and connecting with new people through music. What is your most memorable moment while being an artist? Wow! That’s a tough question! There are so many amazing memories on stage that really stick out. I definitely can’t pick just one moment, but I think the first couple months of making this upcoming record really stand out as one of the most rewarding and exciting times I’ve ever had as an artist. It was the dead of winter and I was pretty much living and breathing these songs while we laid the foundation of the record. I don’t know that I’ve ever been more focused in the studio than I was during that time. The days were long and tough but everything just came together so beautifully. It was a special time for sure. I miss it already! It makes me excited to get back in the studio after this record is out, though. What is the biggest artist you’ve worked with? I’ve been blessed in the last few years to have opened shows for some pretty amazing acts! I don’t know who the “biggest” technically is, but I’ve opened for Judah & The Lion, COIN, and American Authors, just to name a few. It’s always cool to get to meet and share the stage with people you’ve been listening to for years. Any of those shows could have been included as answers in the “most memorable moments” question, too! Haha Tell us a little more about your recent project? I'm currently releasing the few first singles from the project right now, but there’s a full album on the way! It’s been a really fun and simultaneously really challenging record to make. The first single is called “Unhurt You” and it’s out now! I was excited and nervous to release it because I knew it was a big expansion of my sound and pretty different from my previous material, but the feedback has been awesome. I think this whole record keeps the core pillars of who I am as an artist in tact while also being a record where I explore a lot of uncharted territory for me. What should we be looking forward to from you in the future? The next single is a track called “Time Bomb” and it’s about to come out! It might even be out by the time this interview publishes. October 12th is when it releases! I can’t wait for people to hear it. From a production standpoint, “Time Bomb" continues implementing some of the modern production elements of “Unhurt You” while also incorporating more of a throwback soul undertone. I’ve been playing it live for over a year and the response has always been great, so I’m excited to finally get it out in the digital realm! Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
Sure! Enjoy the first two singles and check back for the rest of the album when it drops! They can follow me on social media to stay in the loop with the release and with my shows. But most of all, I want to tell them thank you. I’ve been blessed beyond belief already to have a growing community of people who support me and my music. My career wouldn’t be possible without them, so thank you is the most important thing I could say!
