Interview With Black it Out

Black it Out (also known as BIO) is a rock band based in California. The band formed in 2005 originally under the name Scarlet’s Sonata. The band has gone through several lineup changes and an eight-year hiatus. They returned with their latest album, Resurgence. It was released on March 2019. Recently, in October 2019, they released a Misfits cover called “Halloween.” Black It Out consists of Shaun Zizi (vocals, bass, guitar) and Bryan Underwood (vocals, guitar).

1) When did you realize that you had a passion for music?

We both realized we had a passion for music at a young age. We both had dads who were musicians and always had guitars around the house. Shaun’s mom played bass. It was natural for us to both pick up the guitar and start rocking out. Bryan fell in love with Metallica at a young age, and Shaun got into the punky/alternative stuff like The Misfits, Green Day, and The Offspring.

2) Who are your main inspirations as an artist?

Right now, we’ve been digging Escape the Fate, and Ice Nine Kills. Also, A Day to Remember’s Homesick. Since Shaun saw The Misfits, he’s been listening to everything Danzig, The Misfits, Samhain, and Danzig. He has been enjoying Senses Fail and Scary Kids Scaring Kids too. Bryan has been listening to Saosin, and Senses Fail.

3) What would you like to achieve as an artist?

What we really want is some recognition in music. We would like a small, loyal, cult following. It would truly be amazing to make our band our career and make this our main jobs, but we’d be happy with several loyal fans would listen to our music regularly. 4) Tell us a little more about your recent project? You guys did a Misfits cover. What made you want to do that?

Shaun: I saw The Misfits in September with their original singer, Danzig. I’ve been a fan of The Misfits since high school, and I’ve always wanted to do a cover of one of their songs. The song was a dream come true.

Bryan: We were talking about holiday music, and Shaun brought up “Halloween” by The Misfits. I thought it was a great idea, so I started working on making it our own that weekend.

5) “Halloween” is quite different from what you guys sound like. How’d you make it work with your sound?

Bryan: I arranged the song to sound more like a rock song with post-hardcore elements. Then, I added a bridge with some hardcore inspired breakdowns. We added some electronic music to give it a bit of an electronic vibe, and Shaun added some bells to give it that creepy factor.

Shaun: We changed the vocal arrangement slightly to make it work better with our changes. Bryan produced the song and had us add our signature gang vocals. I think it turned out great.

6) Tell us a bit about your album Resurgence. What was recording that like after such a long hiatus?

It was difficult to find time to come back to music at first, but after the demo of “Reflections” got done, it snowballed from there. That song got the ball rolling for us and inspired us to record some of our old songs from our previous EPs. We recorded two from I’ll Bring the Gun, You Bring the Bullet, and three from Trapped in a Sea of Emotion. We also recorded two previously unrecorded tracks, so it gave the whole album a 2006-2008 post-hardcore vibe. The vocals were probably the hardest part for us at first, but like all things during this album, we got the hang of it, and it got easier as it went on. Recording “Halloween” was way smoother, and we anticipate our next projects to be just as smooth.

7) What should we be looking forward to from you in the future?

We’re working on an easycore Christmas song. It’ll be festive and twisted at the same time. Would you expect anything else from us? After that, we plan on releasing more singles with the modern rock sound.

8) is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
