Interview With She Nova
When did you realise that you had a passion for music?
I was lucky enough to have grown up with a piano in the house and a mother who could play some Beethoven and Mozart. I would watch her hands and copy her until I had the patterns and shapes to play it myself. So sitting down at the piano is in my nature and the imaginative spit-fire I was, needed a place to let it all out. I started writing songs at age 11 and that’s when music stopped being a choice. Songwriting was like therapy that could turn all the intense, jumbled up thoughts and feelings into something tangible that I could understand.
Who are your main inspirations as an artist?
I grew up loving the band Yes.. ugh they are still my favorite for their melodies and lyrics. One time a teacher randomly said my writing reminded them of Yes and I died haha. Lady Gaga proved to me early on when I was just starting to write songs in middle school, that it was possible to be weird and a popstar. Speaking of highschool, System of a Down is prob tied for first fave. I am a rebel at heart and still need their angsty anthems in my life. Again, I love their melodies and in-your-face lyrics. And Billie Eillish is killin’ it. Love what her and Finneas are doing. Dynamite team.
What would you like to achieve as an artist?
I want to grow the Weirdo Crew!!!! This is what I call my fans and they are the freakin’ coolest people!!! I live stream music performances and show the behind the scenes processes of being an independent artist on Twitch. It’s a site that grew popular for live streaming games, but now has a nice little music community. Live streaming has opened up so many things for me as an artist and in ways is much more intimate and interactive than a live show or youtube videos alone. I have made true friends (which has always been the biggest challenge for me living in LA) and it’s become this safe place where we can talk about the real stuff on our minds or what we are going through with no filter. Everyone is accepted with all of their weirdness! I have always felt like an outcast and alienated in social groups so creating a space for people who feel weird like me is #1.
What is your most memorable moment while being an artist?
Recently my fans bought me a loop pedal cuz I have always wanted one! They are all literally the kindest humans I know and really believe in what I’m doing. We have such a pure love. Also, my music video “ADHDAF” won ‘Best Pop Video’ at the Hollywood Women’s Film Festival this year. That was surreal! I had never won anything in my life! The video is about the ups and downs I feel having ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), so I tried to depict that through contrasting a dark, muted palette with colorful, child-like “play” scenes. It means a lot to me to talk about my mental health openly and encourage others to speak freely about it too.
Who is the biggest artist you’ve worked with?
I have collaborated with Grammy Award-winning Black Eyed Peas writer/producer Printz Board, performed on Fox Original Series “GLEE”, and was music director/keyboardist/singer for Atlantic Records artist Alexander Cardinale known for his song “Simple Things” featuring Christina Perri.
I heard you just came off a tour? Where did you go?
I’m actually GOING on tour:) This is my first tour for my show and I couldn’t be more stoked! I am going all across the country from Arizona, Washington, Oregon, California, several cities in Texas, North Dakota and Atlanta. And this is just the beginning!!
What did that tour mean to you?
Everything. I have always dreamed of being able to tour for my music and because of the Weirdo Crew I actually am! I am totally self/fan funded and couldn’t be more grateful. I have weirdos all across the world that want to see me live!
Do you have any future tours planned?
I am an independent artist and booking all of my own shows -- that hustle life haha -- and working really hard to be able to go to more cities in the states and Europe, Canada and Australia after the first US run.
Tell us about your last project (Bubble)?
My song ‘Bubble’. I had had the song for about a year so was really excited to finally put this one out! All my videos are self-made -- I write, design, produce and edit -- and this video in particular was very hands-on because I shot everything in my apartment with the help of my very patient boyfriend at the time. lol
Tell us a little more about your upcoming projects and what they mean to you?
I am releasing an acoustic album called “For the Weirdos” in January. The first two singles off the album are ‘Neon Tears’ & ‘Identity’, two songs I have been playing for my fans at live shows and on Twitch for some time now. They always want to be able to listen to it and add to their playlists, calling the acoustic versions of my songs “#mushifying” and “#soulsquishing, so this album and everything else I do is for them.
Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
