GEEZER$ Interview: 'We wanted GEEZER$ to sound digital but have the power and feel of a live band.'

We were fortunate enough to interview Electronic Punk Duo from Adelaide, Australia, GEEZER$.

What is the story behind GEEZER$/How did you form?

Azz - A lot of late nights hanging out listening to old school hip hop/electronica and talking rubbish. We've both been in bands before but from the first recordings this project had a different energy to anything we'd attempted before individually, it was really exciting and we decided to keep going. We wanted GEEZER$ to sound digital but have the power and feel of a live band.

Kyle - Pretty much what Azz said! The chance to try something new and experiment has been really fun for me. I still feel like it has all the drive of a punk band.

When did you realise you were passionate about music and what made you decide to pursue it?

Azz - I was obsessed with listening to music as a kid. I started playing in bands and nothing up until then had given me the rush that I felt when playing music live and loud. Still hasn't. Constantly learning new things is amazing too. I never saw music as a competition either which really appealed to me.

Kyle - Same. Except I was in England & Azz was in bloody strayA mate.

Probably the first time I played live with a band! Theres nothing like performing live on stage. I started my first band in secondary school and have pretty much been writing songs since then.

Tell us about your new song 'EXTORTION'? And what’s the story behind it?

Kyle - It's about Class war. Rich vs Poor. The future generations vs the old.

Azz - I wanted match what Kyle was saying with a heavy song that we could party to.

How would you describe your music?

Kyle - We like to think of it as Electronic Punk.

Do you play any instruments? And why do you love it?

Azz - I can play a bit of everything 'OK'ish, haha. I feel like I knew what sounds we were looking for with this project though which was pivotal. Even though I'd been playing synths/noises in my previous psych bands, this time around I've been forcing myself to strip back the layers and try to make the songs more powerful using fewer parts rather than just layer over layer over layer which I'm used to doing, it's challenging and very fun. Hearing if a part sucks is easier to make out if there are only 3 of them. Haha.

Who are your main inspirations as an artist? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?

Azz - I'd love to work with Lil Simz one day. Biggest influences for me at the moment are The Prodigy, Gorillaz and IDLES.

Kyle - At the moment Fontaines DC, Shame, IDLES, The Murder Capital, Strange Bones….all the bands in that scene right now are killing it. Any of those bands would be cool! I’d love to make a track with Damon Albarn, actually that would be alright.

What’s next for GEEZER$? What should we be looking forward to from you in the future?

Azz - Completing the final touches to our debut EP 'GET SOLD' and getting it ready for release at the end of the year. We are currently working on some special Youtube stuff with a bunch of different audio-visual crews from around the world.

What would you like to achieve as an artist?

Azz - Buy my parents a house. Again, I'd love to work with other artists on our songs, we have a long list haha. Love to tour overseas after covid. Get enough cash to never have to worry about bills anymore.

Kyle - Buy my mum a house.
