1) When did you realise that you had a passion for music?
I started writing lyrics and poems about five or six years ago as a coping mechanism for my anxiety and depression. It wasn’t until about three or four years ago I started thinking about getting behind a microphone and having my poems and songs come to life. At first, I was awful. Like, the worst thing I have ever heard. But then it started sounding better and more professional. I actually just started school to learn more about the business and production side. I’m 30 and just realized what I want to be when I grow up, an artist.
2) Who are your main inspirations as an artist?
My biggest inspiration would have to be the late Lil Peep. When he passed, thats when I picked up a microphone and told myself that this is what I needed to do. I related to him and his lyrics on every spectrum. I could hear the pain behind his voice. It was tragic what happened to him and he and his music will forever be a pioneer for this genre. Another huge inspiration is blink 182. I grew up listening to pop punk and metal and hardcore and anything that made a lot of noise. The lyricism behind my music is derived from bands like Blink, Asking Alexandria and A Day To Remember. The instrumental aspect is all over the place from your standard 808 kick beat to a pop punk instrumental written all by one guy in his room. I’m very diverse when it comes to style. But I lean more towards the pop punk style beats.
3) What would you like to achieve as an artist?
I’ve been asked this a couple times. I think the biggest achievement as an artist is knowing that the words or music or whatever you wanna call it helped someone. If someone were to come to me and say, “Hey just want you to know your (song) got me through some of the roughest times in my life and I am thankful for that” etc etc, then my job as an artist is complete. To me, it’s not about the money, it’s about delivering a message and telling the people, the next generation, other artists that they aren’t alone. We all go through shit in life, might as well find someone who you relate to ya know?
4) What is your most memorable moment while being an artist?
I guess as of right now the most memorable moment is watching all of this come to life in a sense. I started this project just to vent my problems and my demons. But then people started following me and relating to me and reaching out. It’s one thing to ya know put a song out and be like “okay I feel better” but its another thing when a stranger reaches out and goes “This song hits home for me” Its quite an amazing feeling.
5) Who is the biggest artist you’ve worked with?
Unfortunately, I haven’t had the honor to work with any big artists. I have worked with some pretty talented producers along the way. If I had to choose five artists in the game right now to work with it would have to be, Nothing Nowhere, Smrtdeath, Guccihighwaters, Yesterday, and/or Spaceman Zack. All huge in this genre and all extremely talented and different kinds of artists.
6) Tell us a little more about your recent project?
So, the most recent project is actually my name change. I use to go by _nick0tine. I changed my name to Badgeyy because the old me is dead. I’m not mad or angry anymore at shit that happened to me. No more holding grudges and asking “Why me?” Or “I don’t know what I did to deserve this!” I let it all go and made amends with all the people I hurt back in the day.The only thing that I was holding onto was my artist name. I sleep better knowing that I put it all to rest. I mean I will still write music everyone can relate to, it will just be more upbeat and spirit lifting. I dropped a single called “nick0tine is dead” in hopes people would get a better understanding of who I really am and how far I have actually come not just as an artist but as a human too.
7) What should we be looking forward to from you in the future?
The future looks extremely bright during these dark times and the unknown. I have an EP coming out on Valentines Day with an amazing producer named HXLLXW who has become one of my close friends during this crazy era. I am very excited to release this one. I also have a new album coming out on May 5th called “Badgeyy’s World” which is the first album that I’m dropping with my new name. It’s some of the best work I have done. It’s also some of the most fun I’ve had doing music. I also have a bunch of other things behind the scenes happening so make sure to follow me on my social media platforms!
8) Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers?
A couple things. Never give up. Take it from someone who has had the odds against him since the purchase of his microphone. If you have a dream just follow it. Practice practice practice. People will always hate, might as well have fun while they do. Also, again, be sure to follow me on all social media to stay updated! @Badgeyy on all platforms. I appreciate you for the interview and hopefully the readers get a better idea as to who Badgeyy is. Thanks again!
