Interview With HNB MEKKA: 'I promise, you're not gonna regret it.'

We were fortunate enough to interview artist HNB MEKKA, and talk about his recent project 'Back 2 Back'.

When did you realise that you had a passion for music?

I always had a passion for music, ever since I was little. I remember when I was 9 or 8yrs old, I went to my brother's house for the first time and he had a home studio, with a booth and everything. And I remember telling him that I rap, (I don’t know why) and he laughed at me and told me to go in the booth then and rap. And I went in there and said nonsense but somehow, someway it rhymed. And I knew it was trash so I left and told him, imma write and come back. But I stopped going there as frequently, so I never had to chance to record again. But I always had it in the back of my head, just thinking about recording music. But I never acted on it till senior year in high school. I would write stuff and show my mans and he’ll tell me it’s good and we should go to a studio. So we went to King Leaf Studios, in Brooklyn for the first time and I record my very first track “Jewels” and after that, I really knew that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life

Who are your main inspirations as an artist?

Gunna is one of the artists that was blowing up when I first started taking music seriously. I’m not gonna lie he made me view music differently. His style made it seemed like he was an actual instrument that was in synced, and flowed with the beat, instead of just being on top of it. I would also say, Drake because he showed me that you could just rap and have punchlines and make a person feel every single bar, without them ever getting bored.

What would you like to achieve as an artist?

My main goal as an artist is to create a loyal and family type fan base. I want to have people listen to my music and relate to me while relating to each other. You know what I mean, shit like that make bonds and connections.

What is your most memorable moment while being an artist?

I think it’ll have to be when all my other men came to the studio for the first time. This was probably my third time actually going a actual studio. Usually, it’s just, Me, Gino, Drip, and Smokey, in there tryna record. But this time all of my other men, that doesn’t make music, stopped by to hear and lemme tell you, that shit was a movie. Cause you know it was the first time, I ever recorded in front of that many people. They were like 8 niggas in the spot and I think it was the same session I recorded my third track “Never Again”. It was weird though cause I wasn’t as nervous as I’m usually am when I go in the booth. I went in there and recorded fast asf, and came out and seeing njggas bopping they head and gassing me up telling me “nah nah bro you nice wtff”. And that whole session was just jokes and a lit time. I’ll always remember it.

Who is the biggest artist you’ve worked with?

I don’t have many features with other people outside of HNB. I’m not a big fan of other rappers if I’m being honest. But I do get a track with somebody big coming up. Ya just got to stay in tune for that one.

Tell us a little more about your recent project?

My recent single, that’s out now on all platforms “ Back 2 Back”, is probably one of my best tracks out right now. I personally think it’s better the “Never Again”. I had so much fun making the track, as you could tell the track is a “party song” of sorts. And that because the day before I wrote “Back 2 Back” I went to the craziest party, I’ve ever been too. I’m talking bout niggas on top of the big ass speakers diving into bitches on the floor, liquor splashing everywhere, people falling on the ground, and staying there. The shit was wild, and I had studio time for the next day and I ain’t even write the track yet. By the time I came home, I wasn’t off it but I stayed up till like 6 in the morning, finished it, took a power nap, woke up around like 3, and took my hungover ass to the studio and recorded “Back 2 Back”

What should we be looking forward to from you in the future?

Well, right now I have a video in the making. I about to start taking this music shit to a whole another level. You should also be looking out for my “MixTape” that will be dropping later on. And eventually, I’ll be dropping my first Album. I hope you guys are looking forward to that cause I know I am. Nothing but bangers.
