Interview with alternative hip-hop group Sunderloop

Who are your main inspirations as an artist?

With Sunderloop we wanted to focus on combining indie-rock and hip-hop.

Some of our main inspirations thus include bands such as "Two Door Cinema Club", "Mew" and "Grouplove".

We are also inspired by hip-hop artists such as "Denzel Curry", "NF" and "Brockhampton".

In the large scheme of things, we take inspiration from a wide range of genres and artists. This ranges from prog-rock bands such as "Rush" and "Yes" to pop artists like "ABBA" and "Micheal Jackson".

For us, it was much more important to find a way to incorporate multiple influences into our music, rather than pick one band we liked and doing something similar.

Thus, making a hip-hop/indie-rock hybrid band was the natural thing to do.

This allows us to take inspiration from our favorite genres. Furthermore, this serves as a nice middle-ground for us to integrate elements from both heavier and more commercial influences as well.

Tell us a little more about your recent project?

Our newest single is called "Krasinski".

We call it a hip-hop song but it uses uncommon elements for the genre such as a call and response part, as well as a sung verse and a rapped chorus.

"Krasinski" also utilizes the guitar in a way that a band would, rather than just being part of a beat.

It is a dynamic song that quickly goes from 0 to 100 and back again. Our goal was to make it a catchy song with enough depth to give it replay value.

We also made a music video for the song on top of the largest timber building in the world.

Given that this was our first music video, the idea felt a little over the top at times. Still, we felt that the location fit the energy of the song well, so we rolled with the idea.

The music video is available on our Youtube channel:

What should we be looking forward to from you in the future?

We are just getting started and we have set some big goals for 2021.

First of all, we are looking to push the boundaries of how indie-rock and hip-hop can be combined. We believe that there is a lot of untapped potential in this type of music and are excited about exploring it further.

We are working hard on new material and are sharing our journey through social media. This is where we will be posting updates about new material first, so make sure to follow @sunderloop on all major platforms.
